Ballyvaughan is a picturesque village nestling on the southern shore of Galway Bay. It is surrounded by the unique terraces of the Burren. Ballyvaughan is ideal for touring cyclists or for those who wish to rent a bike for a day. The former famine relief roads are now signposted "Green Road", they provide ideal walking routes and offer views of spectacular landscape. The secluded sandy beach at Bishops Quarter 2km from the village offers safe swimming, and is also ideal for water sports. Kayaking is also catered for in the sheltered water of Ballyvaughan Bay. There are 4 fines examples of 16th century houses in the area. Seanmuckinish tower house and Bawn lies to the north and Gleninagh Castle is in a lovely position by the sea 4 Km south of Ballyvaughan. Nearby is the Holy Well, Tobar na Croiche Naoimhe, with it's 16th century pinnacled well house. Newtown Castle with its circular tower house and Gregans Castle lie adjacent to the Lisdoonvarna road at the foot of Corkscrew Hill.
